2. Information on the collection of personal data
2.1 General
GIZ processes personal data exclusively in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the German Federal Data Protection Act (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz, BDSG).
Personal data are, for example, name, address, email addresses and user behaviour.
GIZ only processes personal data to the extent necessary. Which data is required and processed for which purpose and on what basis is largely determined by the type of service you use or the purpose for which the data is required.
2.2 Cookies
When you visit the GIZ website, small text files known as ‘cookies’ are stored on your computer. They are used to make the online presence more user-friendly and effective overall. Cookies cannot run programs or infect your computer with viruses.
The cookies are partly used for the duration of your stay on the website. All cookies on our websites contain purely technical information, no personal data. It is possible to use the offers (even if not in full functionality) without cookies. Most browsers are set to accept cookies automatically. The storage of cookies can be deactivated or the browser can be set so that the user is informed as soon as cookies are sent. Stored (anonymised) IP addresses are automatically deleted from the server after 7 days.
2.3 Analytical Service Matomo
For statistical purposes and to improve our service, this website uses technology provided by Matomo from the main page weltohnehunger.org to analyse the user behaviour. Matomo is an open source web analytics software, which evaluates and then deletes data. No other use is made of the data, and the data are not passed on to third parties.
The information generated by the cookie is only passed on to the internally operated server. It is not passed on to third parties. The processing of the data is based on Art. 6 para. 1 e) EU-DSGVO with the legitimate interest of usage analysis to improve the web offer. It is possible to object to the processing of user data for the analysis of user behaviour.

Matomo is using "cookies", small text files, that are stored on your computer and are used for the purposes of analyzing website traffic. The data stored in the cookie (including an abbreviated IP address) is transfered to and stored on a server for the purpose of analyzing traffic, which is in turn helping us optimize our website. The processing of the data is based on Art. 6 para. 1 e) EU-DSGVO with the legitimate interest of usage analysis to improve the web offer. Your IP address is anonymized immediately, so that you remain anonymous as a user. The cookie information will not be shared with third parties. You can deactivate the usage of cookies directly inside your browser. Though, by deactivating cookies in general, it may be that you will not be able to use all of the functionality offered by our website. If you don't want the data of your visit to be stored and analyzed, you may opt-out at any time by clicking on the link above. In case the opt-out option is clicked, a so called opt-out cookie is stored in your browser, which tells Matomo not to collect any session data from your visit. WARNING: In case you are deleting your cookies, you will also delete your opt-out-cookie. Therefore, if you visit our website again, you may have to check the opt-out option again, to avoid the tracking of your session.
3. Processing of personal data when contacting us
When users contact us, the data provided is processed in order to be able to respond to the enquiry.
3.1 Contact by email
It is possible to contact GIZ via the email addresses provided. In this case, at least the email address but also any other personal user data transmitted with the email (e.g. family and given name, address) as well as the information contained in the email are stored solely for the purpose of contacting the user and processing the request.
The legal basis for the processing of data in connection with email communication is Article 6 (1) e GDPR.
4. Disclosure to third parties
GIZ does not pass on personal data to third parties unless it is legally obliged or entitled to do so by law.
5. Transfer of data to countries outside Germany
GIZ does not transfer personal data to third countries. When using social media, the privacy policies of the respective providers apply.
6. Duration of data retention
User data will not be kept any longer than is necessary for the purpose for which it is processed or as required by law.
7. IT security of user data
GIZ accords great importance to protecting personal data. For this reason, technical and organisational security measures ensure that data is protected against accidental and intentional manipulation and unintended erasure as well as unauthorised access. These measures are updated accordingly based on technical developments and adapted continuously in line with the risks.

Users also have the right in accordance with Article 77 GDPR to lodge a complaint with the competent data protection supervisory authority. The competent authority is the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI).
